So, right after college, after I realized law school was a really expensive way to figure out what to do for a living and before I was a technical writer, I googled “what can you do with an Anthropology degree” and discovered Cultural Resource Management.

A couple things happened around this time: I got my first couple CRM gigs; the general economic collapse of 2008; and Fable II.

This resulted in me being employed as an archaeologist- but very infrequently, as funding for projects dried up. It was a shitty year. To give you an idea how shitty:

I sold off my books to make ends meet.

This was on top of getting what help I could from my family. I also, kind of, was hungry. Not really hungry, but at the point where I had to make financial decisions that involved “I can make my cell phone bill, which I need to get calls for jobs, but then I can’t buy as many groceries, which I also need to be able to do the fucking jobs when they happen.” The result was discovering a lot of things, like if you call a company they’ll usually work with you on payments,

The result was also that I had to think really hard about what I ate. This is kind of where Fable II comes in. Long and short? Food can make you powerful in Fable II, but sometimes at a cost- be it in morality, in corruption, and/or in weight. It made for great roleplay; my first character went on a few depressed binges.

It also gave me a way to think about food that was pretty divorced from the primary girl lessons- “Diet!”, and the secondary one, “indulge your senses!” Instead, food was fuel. I literally couldn’t work without it.

But I learned that I had to eat, and that I couldn’t afford not to eat well. Not expensively- but it couldn’t be shitty food. (No health care, after all.) And when I did work, all that hiking and digging and decent fuel had an interesting effect- I started getting muscular. My thighs didn’t fit most pants that fit my waist. My shoulders looked weird in baby-doll tees. I had a bit of a beer-belly on top of a dome of abs. (Beer, at least, was cheep.)

But I could park cheap or free at the bottom of a Cincinnati hill and walk up it, and spend all night dancing, and not get winded. I could help friends move, and haul boxes for hours. I could run. I didn’t get dizzy or cranky when I didn’t eat. The whole way my body worked was changing. I called it muscle puberty, because I’d only just gotten used to the version of my body that got me through college. I’d exercised in college, after all. Still, it was turning into something else.

The year ended, eventually, when I got a job that paid steadily, and would lead to me getting paid as a writer for the first time. I was no longer cold. I no longer ached. Some of the muscle faded, but not all- I worked at a desk and came home to run the bridges back and forth across the Ohio. It was a terrible year, but it gave me a gift, because for a year my body was a tool, a machine, a wonderful thing that allowed me to work my will on the world as long as I fed it and kept it relatively safe. I loved it, for that, and I haven’t ever stopped.

It’s good to be strong.

PS The pics are all either me during that year, or various dead things I found while working. Curiously, none of those dead things were actually a part of sites.

Anyone else’s queue all kinds of broken or is my computer messing up? This weekend I couldn’t move anything by grabbing a post and using the keyboard buttons like the arrows and Page Down (but I could slide posts left to right using the mouse which is neat I guess, but completely useless). Now I can’t even move posts unless I enable endless scrolling.

Is this a new feature? A bug? A Chrome problem? Is tumblr picking on me (both my accounts)?

Edit: A search of the “queue problems” tag shows that I’m not alone here. If this is a new feature, I’m not a fan, tumblr.
